UPLB Space Satellite Research Team wins 2nd in 2022 NMIC

The UPLB team, Team Masid, came 2nd out of the 4 top teams whose proposals were selected to be implemented. Team COEUS, from Mindanao State University- Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) garnered 1st place, while Team GreenSat, from De La Salle University (DSLU), and Team CTU Trackers, from Cebu Technological University-main Campus (CTU-MC), garnered the 3rd place and 3rd runner up, respectively. The selected teams will work closely with the ACCESS Nanosat Project team of the Philippine Space Agency to realize their mission ideas.

The Nanosat Mission Idea Contest (NMIC) is a competition among Philippine university students, and researchers to propose mission ideas for 2U cube satellites. Entries from teams were submitted last October 07, 2022 and were pre-evaluated; but only a handful teams were invited to present their proposal to the Advancing Core Competencies and Expertise in Space Studies (ACCESS) Nanosat Project team for a final evaluation last October 28, 2022.

Team Masid, is composed of two BS Applied Physics students, Joven M. Galliguez, and William Kevin L. Abran, four BS Electrical Engineering students, John Mhel C. Policarpio, Reign Cyril H. De Vera, Fatima Joie U. Flores, and Jed L. Soberano, and Engr. Rock Christian V. Tomas from the Department of Electrical Engineering (DEE), who acted as the team’s faculty adviser. Although not formally registered as a team member due to the competition’s 7-individual limitation per team rule, Assoc. Prof. Allan L. Alinea from CAS, joined the team as an extended adviser and consultant. Dr. Alinea was instrumental in fostering the team’s dynamics and in bridging the team’s knowledge gap in the physics of relevant instruments and sensors used in satellites.

More information about the competition results may be found at PhilSA’s official website. | Rock Christian Tomas, November 2022
